Saint Peter's University Hospital welcomes more newborns into the world than does nearly any other hospital in the area. Most require only a brief stay, but some must remain for a longer period. In those cases, we provide special treatment at our Children's Hospital.
High-Risk Infant Follow-Up Program
This program provides ongoing evaluation of babies born prematurely or with serious medical problems. Specific services include developmental, hearing, medical and motor evaluations; social work services; and speech and language assessments.
Infant Apnea Center
The Infant Apnea Center provides care to infants who are at risk of suffering from this sleep disorder. When home monitoring is necessary, the Center provides parents or caregivers with monitor and CPR training, cardiorespiratory monitors, medications, and oxygen therapy training.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Babies born prematurely or with serious medical problems are cared for around the clock by a staff of neonatologists, neonatal nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, neonatal respiratory therapists and pharmacists. Specialty services, including developmental assessment, genetic testing, physical therapy and ultrasound, are available through the unit.
Neonatal Transport Incubator
Saint Peter's three specialized transport incubators are used for interdepartmental transfers, such as when a baby leaves the NICU for radiologic imaging or surgery, and for transfers to Saint Peter's from other hospitals. Essentially a self-contained NICU on wheels, each unit has a respirator; equipment to monitor blood pressure, heart function, respiration and oxygen; suction devices; and pumps to administer intravenous fluids and medications.
Saint Peter's has parenting programs for men and women, providing comprehensive health care services to families.
