Suicide prevention and wellness expert to address emotionally challenged youth

10/23/2015

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Kevin Hines, a suicide prevention and wellness expert, will address children at the For KEEPS behavioral health program for troubled youth at the Family Health Center at How Lane, a part of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System, at 1 p.m. on Oct. 22. Hines is a global speaker, best-selling author, documentary filmmaker and mental health advocate who reaches audiences with his story of an unlikely survival and his strong will to live. Two years after Hines was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (at age 19) he attempted to take his own life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. He is one of only 34 people (less than 1 percent) to survive the fall and he is the only Golden Gate Bridger jump survivor who is actively spreading the message around the globe of living a mentally healthy life. Hines will share his 10 steps for “living mentally well.” He hopes to leave the children with the knowledge of how to build their own toolkit for maintaining mental health. Key takeaways will include understanding what drives suicidal behavior, improving one’s suicide risk prevention skills, and treatment strategies for high-risk individuals.
