Our physical therapists, physical therapist assistants and physical therapy aides augment the medical treatment of patients being cared for throughout Saint Peter's—from our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to our geriatrics department, and everywhere else in between. We treat patients with acute and chronic conditions including orthopedic, neurologic, cardiopulmonary, oncology, diabetic and developmental delays. We first assess the needs of the patient and his or her family, then develop and implement a physical therapy treatment program that will maximize the patient's functional abilities.
A typical PT treatment plan may include:
- Transfer training (moving from bed to a chair, from a chair to the shower, etc.)
- Gait training
- Balance and coordination activities
- Therapeutic exercise
- Manual techniques (such as massage and mobilization)
- Modalities (such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, whirlpool, etc.)
We teach our patients and their caregivers:
- Techniques to improve functional abilities
- How to care for themselves or their loved ones at home
- Home exercise program
- How to maintain good posture and body mechanics—all important to the healing process and preventing future injuries
We also provide a number of community educational programs and special services for outpatients, including:
- The Back School
- Diabetes and Exercise class
- Wound care management, including hydrotherapy, superficial debridement and total-contact casting (requires a referral)
- Breast Cancer Lymphedema Management (requires a referral)
