Radiology services at Saint Peter’s University Hospital are provided by the experienced staff of University Radiology Group. State-of-the art medical imaging technologies, such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are used to help diagnose diseases and conditions, and assess health.
CT (Computer Tomography) Scan
A CT scan produces images in cross section, which reveals more than the overlapping images produced by conventional X-rays. Our radiologists use CT scans as a diagnosis took for various conditions including:
- Muscle and bone disorders
- Locating a tumor, infection or blood clot
- Detecting and monitoring cancer, heart disease, internal injuries, internal bleeding and other conditions
Interventional Radiology
The imaging used to guide tools through the body to diagnose and treat diseases without invasive surgery. Procedures such as uterine artery embolization and cardiac catheterization are examples of procedures done using interventional radiology.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
An MRI is a noninvasive method to examine the brain, neck, spinal cord and soft tissue. MRIs can be used to:
- Identify brain tumors, strokes and chronic disorders of the nervous system
- Reveal brain abnormalities
- Diagnose pituitary gland diseases
- Discover abnormalities in the eye or inner ear tissue
- Find damage caused by heart attack or heart disease
- Detect blood vessel plaques and blockages
- Identify bone and joint infections, injuries, degenerative disorders and tumors
- Reveal tumors and functional disorders in organs
- Detect breast cancer
- Discover reproductive system and bladder problems
Ultrasound
In an ultrasound exam, high-frequency sound waves are used to produce precise images of structures. Ultrasounds are used to
- Evaluate a baby in utero
- Diagnose conditions such as gallbladder disease
- Evaluate flow in blood vessels
- Check the thyroid gland
- Study a patient's heart
- Diagnose forms of infection and cancer
Women’s Imaging
In addition to screening mammography, breast MRI, ultrasound and other routine procedures, and MRI-guided breast biopsies are available at Saint Peter's Women's Imaging Center.
