Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS)

Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) performed at Saint Peter's University Hospital offers many advantages over traditional surgery because incisions are small and less tissue and muscle are cut. Advantages of MIS include:
  • Less trauma
  • Fewer complications
  • Less post-surgery time in hospital
  • Quicker recovery and return to normal activity
  • Less scarring, and in some cases, virtually no scarring
MIS procedures offered at Saint Peter's include:
  • Gastrointestinal and abdominal
  • Hysterectomy
  • Spinal
  • Nephrectomy (kidney)
  • Esophagogastric resection
  • Cancer staging
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Solid organ procedures
  • Vascular
  • Orthopedic
  • Bariatric (weight loss)

Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS)

Surgeons at Saint Peter's were pioneers in Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) when the first surgery was performed at the hospital in 1991. VATS is a superior alternative to traditional open thoracic surgery because it minimizes tissue damage and eliminates rib damage. Most patients require minimal pain medication and are often discharged from the hospital the day after surgery.
