Saint Peter’s Healthcare System, Foundation name board members

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Saint Peter’s Healthcare System has appointed three new members to its board of governors. They are Carol A. Purcell, of Rutherford; Judith T. Caruso, of Gillette, and Tim Schmid, of Princeton. The trio will also serve on the Saint Peter’s University Hospital board of trustees. The Saint Peter’s Foundation has also appointed James J. Hannan of Hillsborough as chairman its board and added two new board members. They are Dani El-Haj, of the Dayton section of South Brunswick, and David J. Samuel, of Sayreville.   

“We are excited to welcome each of these dynamic individuals to our governing boards,” said Ronald C. Rak, J.D., president and CEO of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System. “Each supplies a unique range of talents and perspectives in their respective roles atop our organization.”

Purcell is executive director, temporal affairs, at the Diocese of Metuchen, where she is responsible for finance, administration and operations. She spent 16 years in financial and administrative roles at not-for-profit organizations prior to her appointment at the diocese.

Caruso has more than 40 years of experience as a nurse clinician, clinical nurse specialist, educator, and administrator, and has served for the past 20 years as a healthcare consultant in the N.J.-N.Y. region, with expertise in operations and budgeting for nursing departments.

Schmid is president of ETHICON’s surgical care business in the United States and is a member of its global management board. He leads ETHICON’s U.S. organization, comprised of surgical business in wound care, minimally invasive surgery, bariatrics, and gynecology.

El-Haj is vice president and commercial lending officer for Heritage Community Bank in Denville, where he is responsible for the development of new markets, commercial loan transactions, oversight of approved loans, and management of client relationships.

Hannan is a partner in the accounting and consulting firm of Withum Smith+ Brown, based in the firm’s Morristown office. In addition to his client service roles, he is also the practice leader of its Manufacturing, Distribution and Transportation Group. He has been a member of the Saint Peter’s Foundation board for more than 15 years.

Samuel is the managing partner of CME Associates, a full-service engineering firm, of which he is a co-founder. He is also the borough engineer for Highland Park, Sayreville, South River and Spotswood, and township engineer for Aberdeen, Plainsboro and South Brunswick.
