Hospital rated a high performer in 10 areas of adult medicine

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Saint Peter’s University Hospital has been ranked as the sixth highest-performing hospital in New Jersey and 14th in the New York metropolitan area by U.S. News & World Report in its annual hospital ratings. Saint Peter’s was recognized in 10 areas of adult specialty care: cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology.
Further, 80 percent of Saint Peter’s patients said they would “definitely” recommend Saint Peter's to their friends and family, the second highest percentile among the 102 hospitals in the N.J. survey.
“The U.S. News & World Report rankings are one more indicator that Saint Peter’s University Hospital delivers some of the highest quality medical care to be found in New Jersey and the broader region,” said Ronald C. Rak, JD, president and CEO of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System. “In addition, our extremely positive ratings from our thousands of patients point to the compassion and personal attention that are the hallmarks of Saint Peter’s as a Catholic institution in treating each person as a unique human being.”
Patients also said, among the list of quality indicators, that Saint Peter’s nurses and physicians were courteous and respectful, listened carefully, and explained things clearly; patient rooms were clean, and that staff provided clear instructions for follow-up medical care at the time of hospital discharge.
“The reputation of Saint Peter’s as a top provider of care is growing in close tandem with our list of awards and accolades,” Rak added
,  further indication that Saint Peter’s is a leader in our industry.”

Saint Peter’s has earned national quality designations including:
- Saint Peter’s is the sixth hospital in the world to be recognized as a Magnet hospital for excellence in nursing – the profession’s highest honor – for four consecutive terms.
- The nurses in the Saint Peter’s Intensive Care Unit have won the national Beacon Award for critical care excellence for three consecutive terms, a record achieved by only 10 units in the nation.
- Saint Peter’s was designated once more this spring as a “Top Performer” for quality and safety in patient care by The Joint Commission,  the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America.
- Saint Peter’s owns an “A” grade for quality and safety by The Leapfrog Group, an industry watchdog that rates how well U.S. hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections.
- In April, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses conferred a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Saint Peter’s, which is the only NICU in New Jersey and one of just six in the United States to be so designated.
