Saint Peter’s Implements CT-Free Robotic-Assisted Orthopedic Surgery for Partial/Total Knee Replacement

April 30, 2018

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.: Saint Peter’s University Hospital announced the addition of a NAVIO™ orthopedic surgical system to help surgeons perform precise and accurate partial and total knee replacement surgeries using the JOURNEY™ UNI knee from global medical device maker Smith & Nephew. This technology for partial and total knee replacements uses a CT-free intra-operative registration, planning and navigation platform to assist the surgeon in building patient-specific surgical plans. NAVIO robotics assists the surgeon in preparing the bone with the precision of robotics in a freehand sculpting technique.

The NAVIO hand piece is a freehand surgical instrument with integrated computer control. Virtual navigation shows the progress in real time during surgery.

“It’s the difference between going into unknown territory guided by a GPS versus going in without knowing what to expect,” said orthopedic surgeon Alfred Tria, MD, chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Saint Peter’s University Hospital. “NAVIO makes it easier to deliver accurate and precise results tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy. There is also less post-operative pain and swelling associated with this procedure versus traditional joint replacement methods.”

With no pre-operative CT-scan required, NAVIO patients receive the benefits of robotic assistance without additional time spent for pre-operative procedures. Instead, the surgeon collects anatomical data during the procedure to build a 3D model of the patient’s knee. This information helps the surgeon place the implant and balance the knee’s ligaments for optimal alignment and a well-balanced knee.

Partial knee replacement is used to treat osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that affects approximately 27 million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage breaks down between joints, such as the knee. To learn more about who may benefit from a NAVIO knee surgical procedure, contact the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at 732-565-5417.

Community education efforts are planned for the treatment of knee pain using CT-Free Robotic Orthopedic Surgery. Saint Peter’s Healthcare System will offer a free seminar on the NAVIO surgical system with Dr. David A. Harwood, Orthopedic Surgeon, on Thurs., June 21, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Sister Marie de Pazzi Conference Center at Saint Peter’s University Hospital, 254 Easton Ave., New Brunswick, N.J. Refreshments and appetizers will be served. For more information or to register, visit www.saintpetersknee.com or call 732-230-7474.
