April 29, 2020

Philadelphia (2020) – Nayan K. Kothari, MD, MACP, has been named Governor of the New Jersey Southern Region of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the national organization of internists. ACP is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. The organization works diligently to support the physician-patient relationship and the profession of internal medicine. ACP-NJ has more than 4,800 members and The Board of Governors serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Regents implementing national projects in addition to representing members at the national level.

Nayan K. Kothari, MD, FACP, FACR, is chairman of the Department of Medicine and program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He is a graduate of Mysore Medical College in India and completed his residency at St. Peter’s Medical Center. He became a Master of ACP (MACP) in 2014. Election to Mastership recognizes outstanding and extraordinary career accomplishments. Dr. Kothari is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, and Geriatrics.

Dr. Kothari was instrumental in establishing Saint Peter’s Simulation Center for Interprofessional Learning. The Simulation Center promotes the development of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Within the Center, physicians, nurses and other healthcare personnel participate in supervised, hands-on training in practices and procedures, maintenance of certifications, and in dealing with complex and newly introduced protocols that can save lives. All the training is conducted in real time and with real equipment, only substituting mannequins for patients.

He has received several teaching awards from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Drexel University College of Medicine, the Edward J. Ill Outstanding Medical Education Award from the Excellence in Medicine Foundation, and the Academic Award from the Middlesex County Medical Society.

ACP Governors are elected by local ACP members and serve four-year terms. Their key responsibilities include advocacy on behalf of the local membership to communicate concerns to the state and national level. Working with a local council, they supervise ACP chapter activities, appoint members to local committees, and preside at regional meetings. They also represent members by serving on the ACP Board of Governors. As Governor, Dr. Kothari will collaborate with the members of ACP-NJ to ensure the voice of internal medicine is heard while also facilitating educational resources to enhance continuing education of its members.
