Nursing Excellence

Commited to a Culture of Nursing Excellence

The American Nurses Credentialing Center's Magnet Recognition Program® is the most prestigious distinction a health care organization can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. It is the gold standard for hospital nursing.  Organizations that achieve Magnet recognition are part of an esteemed group that demonstrates superior nursing practices and outcomes.

Saint Peter’s first received Magnet recognition in 1998, most recently becoming only the fifth hospital out of 430 in the world to earn Magnet recognition five times in a row from the ANCC.
Recognition follows an intense survey of more than 90 areas during an on-site visit by nursing experts.  Research shows that patients who stay in Magnet hospitals, benefit from many positive outcomes, including fewer falls, fewer bed sores, infections and death.

Every year the Saint Peter’s Family celebrates the nurses who have completed undergraduate, graduate and doctoral nursing programs during a graduation ceremony.

The Beacon Award for Excellence is a testament to the extensive training, expertise and patient-centered care that are the hallmarks of our nurses at Saint Peter’s. Conferred by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), it is a significant milestone on the path to exceptional patient care and healthy work environments. It recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards. Recipients of a Gold Beacon Award demonstrate excellence in sustained unit performance and patient outcomes. Silver-level recipients demonstrate continuous learning and effective systems to achieve optimal patient care. Bronze-level awardees demonstrate success in developing, deploying and integrating unit-based performance criteria for optimal outcomes.

Both the Adult and Neonatal Intensive Care units at Saint Peter’s are recipients of Beacon Awards.

Each month a Saint Peter’s nurse is awarded The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses.  This international award program recognizes nurses who along with clinical skill demonstrate great compassion for their patients. Saint Peter’s is proud to be among the thousands of healthcare organizations in 22 countries that recognize Daisy nurses. The Daisy Award was created in memory of Patrick Barnes, and in tribute to the team of nurses who took care of him, by his family.

Celebrating achievement

In addition to the many recognition events hosted by units and departments, Saint Peter’s Healthcare System gathers once a year to host a graduation ceremony to celebrate all nursing staff members who have graduated with bachelor, master’s or doctorate degrees.
