Saint Peter's University Hospital

Saint Peter's University Hospital

Located in New Brunswick, NJ, Saint Peter's University Hospital has been serving the healthcare needs of central New Jersey for more than a century. From our simple beginnings in 1907, Saint Peter's has grown to become a technologically advanced, 478-bed teaching hospital that provides a broad array of services to the community. Saint Peter's University Hospital, a member of the Saint Peter’s Healthcare System, is a non-profit, acute care facility sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen, NJ.

Saint Peter's brings the latest medical practices and highly skilled professionals to the bedside. We treat more than 30,000 inpatients and more than 200,000 outpatients annually. We employ 2,800 healthcare professionals and support personnel, and more than 900 physicians and dentists have privileges at our facility.

As a NJ state-designated acute care children's hospital, we offer a full range of specialized pediatric healthcare services, including one of the most sophisticated maternity programs, delivering as many as 5,800 newborns annually. The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital operates one of the largest and most advanced neonatal intensive care units in the country as part of the hospital’s state-designation as a Regional Perinatal Center.

Saint Peter’s offers cancer care for both adults and children, including inpatient care and outpatient radiation and infusion services. Since 1985, our cancer program has been accredited by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program. In 2009 Saint Peter’s was the first hospital in central New Jersey and the second in the state to earn accreditation for its breast cancer services. The Saint Peter’s Breast Center, now part of the Saint Peter’s Physician Associates network, earned its third three-year/full accreditation in 2015 from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, or NAPBC.

Saint Peter’s University Hospital is designated as a primary stroke center by the New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services. A primary stroke center is the first line of defense in diagnosing and treating strokes and preventing or minimizing permanent brain damage.

Saint Peter’s University Hospital recently opened its newly constructed adult and pediatric emergency departments that expanded its square footage from 18,000 square feet to approximately 29,000 square feet. The new emergency department, large enough to easily treat 70,000 to 75,000 patients a year, includes the Robert and Joan Campbell Adult Emergency Department; the Sharon and John H. Hajjar, MD, Sovereign Medical Services Fast Track Department, and The Dorothy B. Hersh Pediatric Emergency Department – one of the largest pediatric emergency departments in New Jersey. In addition there is a new front entrance, a redesigned visitors’ area, a new and larger entranceway for ambulances with increased ambulance parking. The Emergency Department now holds 56 beds – the vast majority of those four-wall private rooms. A small number of others – so-called “curtained rooms” – are in the fast-track area.

Saint Peter's University Hospital is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and was the tenth hospital in the nation to be designated as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 1998. In 2010, we became one of only six hospitals in the world to have achieved this honor for a fourth consecutive term. As the “gold standard” of nursing care, the Magnet Award is the highest honor given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. And, Saint Peter's Intensive Care Unit is one of only a few intensive care units out of 6,000 in the country to receive the Beacon Award for Excellence in Critical Care four times. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital is the only NICU in New Jersey to receive the Beacon Award for Excellence in the delivery of neonatal intensive care.

Saint Peter’s University Hospital continues to be recognized as a Top Performer and deliverer of services in the region by accrediting and quality-measuring organizations. The hospital is among 620 hospitals nationwide cited as a Top Performer on Joint Commission Key Quality Measures™ by The Joint Commission, the nation’s leading healthcare accreditation organization.

The Commission’s report includes Saint Peter’s among the top hospitals leading the way nationally in providing a level of care that leads to positive patient outcomes. The elite group makes up the top 18 percent of the 3,400 Joint Commission accredited hospitals. Saint Peter’s is recognized for exemplary performance in the treatment of such conditions as heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical care. The Top Performer on Joint Commission Key Quality Measures 2013 award demonstrates the sustained quality of service that Saint Peter’s delivers in these conditions. In addition, Saint Peter’s is the only hospital in New Jersey cited for exemplary performance in the treatment of childhood asthma two times in a row.

Saint Peter’s University Hospital earned an “A” grade in the Fall 2015 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be analyzed in the peer-reviewed Journal of Patient Safety, the score is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.

In support of our mission to provide quality medical education, Saint Peter's is a major clinical affiliate of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences.
