Pediatric Audiology

The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital offers comprehensive audiology services for children. Our licensed audiologist holds a certificate of clinical competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA). Services include hearing (audiological) evaluations, hearing aid evaluations and fittings, auditory steady state response testing (ASSR) and auditory processing disorder examinations.

Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR)

Using FDA-approved technology, and sometimes conscious sedation when needed, the function of the auditory nerve in young children is tested during this exam when behavioral testing has been inconclusive and further electrophysiological testing is needed.

At Saint Peter’s children are evaluated for auditory processing disorder when they have difficulty with one or more behaviors:

  • Hearing in noisy situations
  • Following long conversations
  • Remembering spoken information
  • Taking notes
  • Maintaining focus on an activity if other sounds are present
  • Following multi-step directions
  • Directing, sustaining or dividing attention
  • Reading and/or spelling.

The Audiology Department is located in the Center for Ambulatory Resources (CARES), across from the Women and Children’s Pavilion at The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital. For more information or to make an appointment, call 732-937-6026. You may need a referral from your physician.
