Saint Peter’s University Hospital is Five-star Rated for Patient Safety by Healthgrades
Saint Peter’s University Hospital delivers industry-leading outcomes in patient safety

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – March 23, 2023 – Saint Peter’s University Hospital, a member of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System, announced it is five-star  rated for patient safety according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients. This five-star rating reflects Saint Peter’s dedication to delivering better-than-expected clinical outcomes for patient safety and distinguishes Saint Peter’s as one of the nation’s leading hospitals for specialty care.

Saint Peter’s University Hospital is committed to safe, effective care for its patients. This accolade from Healthgrades further proves that Saint Peter’s is continually reviewing outcomes to improve patient care.

“Patient safety indicators, which are at the heart of this ranking are just one way we track quality and patient safety,” said Niranjan Rao, MD, FACS, vice president and chief medical officer. “We are on the road to high reliability, which is a journey, not a destination. This means we are focused on areas for improvement, while soliciting input from clinical staff and accounting for the complexity of healthcare delivery. In line with The Joint Commission’s goal of Zero Harm, our performance shows movement towards reducing preventable harm in all areas of the healthcare system.”

“Saint Peter’s University Hospital, guided by our Catholic mission, is pledged to creating an environment of mutual support among employees and physicians and to pursuing clinical excellence and patient safety,” said Leslie D. Hirsch, FACHE, president and CEO, Saint Peter’s Healthcare System. “We are proud to be recognized among the country’s best hospitals for patient safety, further demonstrating our ongoing commitment to prioritizing safe, quality health care for those who entrust us with their care.”

Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 31 common conditions and procedures at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide to identify the top-performing hospitals for patient safety. This year’s analysis revealed significant variation in patient outcomes between five-star hospitals and one-star hospitals. From 2019 through 2021, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to five-star hospitals, on average, 201,586 lives could potentially have been saved, and 160,498 patients could have avoided potential complications.*

“We commend Saint Peter’s University Hospital for their ongoing commitment to providing high-quality care to patients,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “Consumers can feel confident that hospitals with a five-star rating by Healthgrades have demonstrated their ability to deliver consistently exceptional outcomes.”
