It Is Time for Strawberries!

Strawberry season is upon us.  Did you know that cup of fresh strawberries, about eight medium, has 50 calories, 160 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin C and 3.3 grams of heart-healthy and digestive-healthy fiber. Strawberries are also rich in antioxidants, including anthocyanins, which give them their bright red color.

How to select

Choose shiny, firm strawberries with a bright red color. Caps should be fresh, green and intact. Avoid shriveled, mushy or leaky berries.

How to store

Do not wash strawberries until ready to eat. Store in refrigerator for one to three days, or wash and freeze on a baking sheet for later use.

How to use

Fresh strawberries can be eaten raw, or used in recipes such as salads, smoothies and desserts.
