Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Saint Peter’s Children’s Hospital’s newly renovated Hersh Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) provides specialized, around-the-clock care for critically ill and injured children. The new PICU features 14 private patient rooms, each with additional space for parents and caregivers to remain at their child’s bedside.
The PICU cares for children with serious illnesses, traumatic injuries, respiratory failure, complex infections, neurological conditions and those recovering from major surgery. A multidisciplinary team of pediatric intensivists, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists and other specialists provides advanced pediatric critical care tailored to each child’s needs.
In addition to routine pediatric intensive care, the PICU provides conscious sedation for invasive or painful procedures and uses advanced therapies to treat respiratory failure and other complex conditions. The team also supports children undergoing procedures and treatments including airway reconstruction, chemotherapy, craniofacial surgery, neurosurgery and plasmapheresis.
As children recover, Saint Peter’s is also transforming the former PICU space into a general pediatrics and step-down unit for children who no longer require intensive care but continue to need a higher level of monitoring and support.
For families who live outside the area, Saint Peter’s social work staff can assist with local accommodations. The Ronald McDonald House of Central and Northern New Jersey is located a few blocks from Saint Peter’s in New Brunswick.
