Radiation Oncology
Radiation oncologists from Astera Cancer Care provide advanced cancer therapy and compassionate patient care at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in close collaboration with Saint Peter’s pathologists, oncologists, surgeons, and other cancer specialists. The partnership between Astera and Saint Peter’s clinicians offers high-quality cancer care in Saint Peter’s family-centered environment close to home.
TrueBeam Radiotherapy
TrueBeam radiation therapy, now available at Saint Peter’s, is a non-invasive treatment option. There are no scalpels, no incisions, and in most cases, no hospitalization required. The TrueBeam linear accelerator treats cancer by delivering high doses of radiotherapy with tremendous accuracy, targeting tumors precisely while minimizing exposure of the surrounding healthy tissues and organs.
With this state-of-the-art technology, patients can benefit from shorter treatment times, improved comfort, and expanded access to advanced techniques like Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), and Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT).
Exceptional Precision
With its sophisticated 3D and real time imaging capabilities, Truebeam allows the radiation oncologist to clearly visualize a tumor moment by moment throughout each treatment session. At the heart of this precision is the multileaf collimator, a highly advanced device that shapes the radiation beam to precisely match the size, shape, and position of your tumor. This means higher doses of radiation can be delivered directly to the tumor, while minimizing exposure to nearby healthy tissue.
Even tumors that move during breathing—such as those in the lungs—can be treated with exceptional precision. Vision RT uses cameras to track a patient's surface during radiation therapy. This allows for real-time monitoring of patient position and movement, ensuring accurate and safe radiation delivery. Advanced motion management tools built into the TrueBeam system, along with Vision RT’s real-time surface tracking, ensure the radiation beam is only activated when the tumor is in the ideal position.
Fast Treatment Sessions
TrueBeam’s automated system helps reduce treatment time. In many cases, patients can be in and out in as little as 20 minutes, which helps minimize disruption to their life.
A closed-circuit television system lets the radiation therapist watch their patient during treatment, and two-way audio lets the patient talk with the therapist throughout treatment. TrueBeam runs so quietly, patients can listen to music during treatment to help them relax.
