Newsweek Names CARES Surgicenter at Saint Peter’s Healthcare System Among Nation’s Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers
New Brunswick, N.J. – November 30, 2023 – Saint Peter’s Healthcare System is proud to announce that the CARES Surgicenter has been named to Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers 2024. This prestigious award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. This is the third year in a row that the CARES Surgicenter has been named among the best ambulatory surgery centers (ASC) in the nation. The comprehensive awards list can be viewed on Newsweek’s website here.

The America’s Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers 2024 awards the leading ambulatory surgery centers in the US based on quality of care, performance data and peer recommendations, relative to in-state competition. Included ASC operates exclusively for the purpose of providing surgical services to patients not requiring hospitalization and in which expected duration of services would not exceed 24 hours following an admission. The 25 states with the most facilities according to the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) (this includes New Jersey) were surveyed individually. The remaining states were grouped into four regions. ASCs from these states were considered accordingly.

“At Saint Peter’s CARES Surgicenter, we strive to exceed standards of care, treating each patient as we would want our own family members to be treated,” said Kevin Nini, MD, surgeon and chairman of the CARES Surgicenter board. “We are extremely proud to have been recognized by Newsweek for this level of performance for a third year in a row. In addition to compassionate care, our team of medical professionals are among the best educated and best trained physicians in the region, each committed to delivering safety, comfort and a superior experience to every patient that comes through our doors.”

According to Newsweek, the goal of its rankings is to assist readers in making informed decisions when seeking care for themselves and their loved ones. This year’s list of top ASCs spotlights 550 facilities in the 25 U.S. states with the most ambulatory surgery centers. Saint Peter’s CARES Surgicenter received the #2 ranking when evaluated in comparison to 29 other ASCs in New Jersey. Working with data research firm Statista, Newsweek analyzed individual centers’ performance data. As part of the research, they conducted a survey of experts, asking nurses, therapists, physicians and surgeons, and administrators in ASCs for the best surgery centers in their state or a state they were familiar with. Self-recommendation was not possible (e.g., a recommendation of the ambulatory surgery centers someone worked for was not counted in the evaluation).

In addition to a survey of in-state experts, experts from all over the US were able to participate in the survey of the Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers in the U.S. on newsweek.com. All data was collected by Newsweek and Statista during the survey period from June to July 2023.

“The CARES Surgicenter has continually been recognized as serving patients with the highest standard of care and it is a credit to our healthcare providers and support team that we have once again qualified for this distinction as being among the nation’s best and one of the tops in the state,” said Leslie D. Hirsch, FACHE, president and CEO of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System.
Statista publishes hundreds of worldwide industry rankings and company listings with high profile media partners. This research and analysis service are based on the success of statista.com, the leading data and business intelligence portal that provides statistics, business relevant data, and various market and consumer studies and surveys.
For each recommended ASC, participants were asked to rate four quality dimensions on a scale from 1 ("Poor") to 10 ("Excellent"):
  • Management of the COVID-19 crisis (e.g., safety and hygiene measures)
  • Management of waiting time (e.g., appointments)
  • Quality of surgical care (e.g., procedure)
  • Quality of follow-up care (e.g., physical therapies)
